Creating a Spotlight that includes Annotations

Many Footnote members are uploading historical photos and graphics that they want to share with the Footnote community as Spotlights.  The images often contain many persons or items of interest and by annotating them, others can see the names of the people, places and items in the image.

Sometimes members wonder why only one face or item appears in their Spotlight when it is seen on the “Recent Member Discoveries” list.

The problem is caused when a Spotlight is created and then the member annotates the image.  The Discoveries list is designed to only show one posting by a member at a time.  Thus only the most recent addition, comment, upload, story page or annotation appears on the list.

When you create your next full image spotlight that will also contain annotations, be sure to create the annotations before you create your spotlight.  Then your spotlight will contain the entire image rather than just the content of our last annotation.

  1. Wonderful idea…How do I get my photo in the mix?

  2. Lee says:

Just upload your photo(s)/ files to your gallery(ies) on Footnote. Once uploaded, double click on the photo or graphic you want to annotate and then click on the annotation button above it.

Choose the type of annotation that fits … person, date, place or text.

Drag the corners of the annotation box around the subject of your annotation and save it after your typing is complete.

Next, double click on the same image and then on the Spotlight button above the image. Write a title and a description of the image and save it. It is best to write a descriptive title so others will have interest in your spotlight.

That’s all there is to it.

I have story/info on my family tree back to 1580 in England . First ancestor arrived in James town VA in 1637.
Would you be interrested in this type info?

Info not repeated. I hit submit button twice.

Yes, your family information would be of interest to many Footnote users. The best way to put the story on the site would be to create a Story Page.

If you have images that relate to the people and places in your story page, you can upload them to your gallery and then include them in the related entries.

If you haven’t viewed story pages before, you can see many examples at this address… http://www.footnote.com/storypages/
