Have you checked out Fold3’s new WWI Panoramic Unit Photos yet? This free collection, via the National World War I Museum, includes a variety of WWI-era panoramic images. Many of the photos are group shots of military units, but there are also group photos of other organizations connected to the military, as well as images of military cemeteries, Navy ships, military camps, and more.

The amount of information available varies per photo, but whenever possible, Fold3 has included the names of the individuals pictured and the description, military unit, location, and date.

  1. I’m so glad you’ve highlighted this excellent collection. I am working with old group photos to identify individuals and hope to learn more about the men pictured with my grandfather in a 1918 snapshot taken at Camp Funston, Kansas. http://www.thefamilycurator.com/home/2015/8/20/hey-soldier-whats-your-name-crowdsourcing-ids-in-old-group-p.html

Do you have pictures of Canadian WW 1 soldiers?

    • Hi I only have six military wide photos from the 3rd Armor Division battalion at Camp Beale in California from 1943 when the famed 3rd Armored Division’s ‘Black Cat’s’ were created one year before. There art a thousand or more men in that photo. I also have a photo from late 1800s or early 1900s with possible relatives I cannot figure out who they are of U.S. Calvary Soldiers or Rangers. I need to have that identified as to what year. I also have numerous hand-paint studio photos that were colored from Camp Grant in 1931. are photos of Bill Carson, Dolly Carson, M. C. Cooper in color, and one with a gunnery Sgt. and another couple and my mom during girl practice by their tent on Base. Girls were allow to visit their menfolk on base before being sent to Europe or Asia (not sure which) I am 74 and Only a few relatives of those in my pictures are alive but I cannot find any of them or their families Two of my 7 large 2 feet long and 10 inches high Battalion photos of the 3rd Armored Division are posted in my Allen Family Tree under George Charles Allen Sr. Not sure if anyone can see the tree. I have it in Public view mode. I intend to put some more of the hand-painted colored photos from 1931 and from my dad between 1942 to 1945. Have a nice day Judy. I may put a page of the war photos onto my website.

      Best regards, John W. Allen,
Seattle, and I am 74-years-old and served in the U.S. Army

    • Hi, are you referring to publish a book or just on the Internet?

I self published 12 books over the past 35-years. One book, 36-pages and a full page of color with 12 wallet sized colored photos that I printed my self, sold over 103,000 copies between 1976 and 2010 when I stopped printing them up.

You can make e-books, etc from many online sites that show how to make one or you can seek a publisher if you want those images to be available to the general public world-wide. That is a book that should be published and available at all University and Colleges and Military libraries world wide.

      Have a nice day.

  6. Will Posey says:

Looking for information and/or photo of my grandfather, Quimby Dyer, who was a YMCA representative at Camp Gordon, Georgia in WW I.

  7. I have several of my dad’s from the Black Cat Division from WW 2. Can I post those on my family tree as well.

    • Susan Watson says:

Of course, they are your photos. Great way to share.
Do you have names? I see no reason you can’t post them for identification purposes.
Did you contact the Military History Unit to see if the might like it copy? Especially if you have names and unit identification.

    • HI, I need to let them sit under some bricks for a month or so to get them not to curl.. They were rolled up in scroll form, and I have four of them from the Black Cat Division. They do not fit on my scanner so I need to take them to a copy shop to get them onto a disc and then I can put them into my Family album on Ancestry.

I do have another question, I am unable to find any military records of my father and his brother who also served. I also had another relative on my Grandfather’s brother’s side I am unable to find information about from WW1 or WW2. Not sure which one.

And then while I have my discharge papers I could not find any records of me either. I only have one photo folder that I think is from my basic at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri but cannot find anything of my 2nd 8 weeks at Ft. Gordon. The Leonardwood photos are the whole company so it is three pages in size and they accidentally put my name on the person who is to the left of me in the first platoon.

It may be a month before those very wide photos of the whole battalion is ready to take outside to a copy shop to get the them on a disc so I can put them on my computer and then onto my Allen Family Tree at Ancestry.

Thank you for the input and if you could help with any info on my dad (he had a bad time when he came home from WW2 and one day when I was about ten or so he left and never came back. I found his ex-wife’s (he never divorced my mom) military request for his grave marker and the info on the request form was changed by whomever handled the request. There were several errors on the form and someone in red ink put in corrections but I used that to try to find relatives and could not on your site.

My dad’s family came from Ireland and my mothers from Germany in the mid to late 1800s. So when I received an email from your site about DNA for family members who may have fought in the American Revolution I did not respond. I cannot afford DNA tests for long dead relatives I never knew. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

      Best regards,

      John W. Allen

      Have a nice day.

  8. Ron Brown says:

Looking for a picture of the “379th Casual Infantry Company” from WW1.

  9. H. M. Stevenson says:

Interested in photos of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in WW1 that my father was in 1917-1918 left Canada for Liverpool. He was a US citizen serving in Canada where he lived with my mother and siblings. We were blessed with dual citizenships in those days.

  10. I will post three of my photos in my family tree available for public viewing at ancestry/ Problem is that they were so wide I could not get the left and right side into the scanner. Those were the smaller wide images. Not sure but I think I will post them in my father’s page on my site. He is George Charles Allen on my tree’s page. Not sure of the pages but I can later change them after I get them scanned at a local copy shop. Currently I am weighing down with big heavy bricks the long ones that are very wide because they show whole battalions of GI’s from WW2. My tree is the Allen Family Tree and I am not sure how it looks to others who open it up.
    john

  11. I have now put up the two wide photos missing about 2 inches of the photos from the left and right side of the picture as they were too wide for my scanner.

  12. I was wondering if you have anything on the First Special Force..they were Canadian and U S men. I had a brother killed at Anizo Beach..he was a paratrooper, his name was JOHN NOLAN NEWMAN. Anything you might have would be greatly appreciated. MARY ANNE

  13. Pam Atherstone says:

To John W. Allen: If you lightly mist the back side of the long photos with plain water they will lay flat sooner. The moisture help ‘relax’ the paper. Also, for photos that are otherwise too large for your scanner, you can take a picture of them with your smartphone (if you have one) and upload them into your computer. I do this often in libraries for documents I am not allowed to place in a copy machine, as the copier might do damage to the item. Works wonderfully, and I don’t have to haul a lot of extra papers around. I can also upload these same pics to my family tree.
P.S. I have Allen family members in my tree, but they are several generations back.

    • Hi Pam, thanks for the information. I do not own any cell phones or apps other than my computer and graphic art software. I detest cell phones and I save images in very large sizes on my computer. 300 to 600 and 1200 for slides.

AS for my father, I only have a few dozen or less photos of him as he left home. He was born in Providence, R.I. and had family members as far as I know, in Tennessee and Kentucky. I think Kentucky James Lane Allen (author) is one of my ancestors from 1900s. Not sure though. I am still trying to get his military records to see if I can find him. Unable to find birth cerificate and he had a brother name Howard that I have one photo only and also his mother’s maiden name was Dean, but I do not know her first name.

      have a nice day.

      John

    • I only have the images of Camp Beale and the ‘Black Cat’ Division before it went to Europe. I am waiting for those to flatten so I can scan to disc at a copy shop where they have giant scanners.
Thanks to all those who served their country.

This is for Judy Plett who inquired about WWI photos of Canadian soldiers. A few
years ago, I donated some unit photos of the Polish Canadian/American Volunteer
unit to the PRCU (Polish Roman Catholic Union) here in Chicago. If interested, I’m
sure they can e-mail you a copy.
